Sumo citrus, commonly known as dekopon in Japan, is an orange-like citrus, exhibiting a sweet and juicy flavor with a touch of sourness. At Yamashita Fruit Garden in Kumamoto Prefecture, they grow their citrus fruits in a mild climate with abundant ocean breezes and harvest them from mid-February until April. After this they capture the fresh citrus flavor into this chunky jam, Sumo Citrus (Dekopon) Preserve, in-house. Each sumo citrus fruit is carefully picked, selected, and peeled by hand. The preserve features large sumo citrus pieces and a gentle sweetness—they use only the minimum amount of sugar to highlight the natural flavor of sumo citrus. Because it does not contain any citrus peel, the preserve fully brings out the scrumptious sumo citrus taste but without any bitterness. Sumo Citrus (Dekopon) Preserve is enjoyable with any kind of bread as well as for accompanying desserts like ice cream and yogurt.

This chunky, flavorful citrus preserve is enjoyable with any kind of bread, including white bread, scones, croissants, brioche, sourdough bread, bagels, and baguettes. It also adds a refreshingly sweet kick to ice cream, yogurt, and cheese. You can use it for accompanying desserts like cheesecake, chocolate cake, cookies, and jellies. If you stir a spoonful into black tea—we recommend English Breakfast or Darjeeling—you can create an exquisite flavored tea that you can enjoy until the last scoop of the citrus flesh. You can also add it into sweetened soda to play with an extra layer of texture and citrus flavor.

Orange, Granulated Sugar, Lemon Juice.

Sweet & Light

Wasn’t sure what to expect with the Sumo Citrus! Since I love sumo citrus fruit I wanted to try this preserve. It was excellent. Very light with nice pieces of sumo. I actually used it on a salmon filet! Marvelous! So don’t think it is only for breads, biscuits, etc!
